Four steps, one standard. Every course is built to meet each shooter where they are — beginner to advanced — and push real development at any level. Each tier counts toward the Artifex Capstone, earned by reaching a high standard across all three courses on a platform — pistol or carbine, or both.

Why We Call It Artifex.
Artifex is Latin for craftsman — a master of an art. It’s the root beneath the word “artisan,” and it names exactly what we’re building toward. Black Watch treats shooting as a craft: not a talent you’re born with, but a discipline you build deliberately, rep by rep, through Pistolcraft and Riflecraft alike. The Artifex Capstone is where that craft is proven — pistol or carbine, tested under pressure until the work speaks for itself.
We chose the name because it marks a standard, not a certificate. An Artifex isn’t simply someone who finished the courses; it’s a shooter who has reached a high standard across every course on their platform and made the skill their own — composed under stress and able to solve the problem in front of them. The Capstone is earned on the pistol or the carbine, each carrying its own Artifex Patch & Coin awarded through review-board sign-off; master both and you earn both. Either way the mark means the same thing: a craftsman of the gun, in the fullest sense of the word.
